There are a lot of different reasons you might visit your pediatrician. There are of course those times when you have strep throat or ear infections, or are due for your annual check-up or immunizations. But your pediatrician can be a great resource for some other common questions and problems that arise during your tween and teen years!
Here are just a few other examples....
- Skin Care: While I love our friendly dermatologists, your pediatrician can help you get started with some basic skin care routines and treatment for your pimples. Basic rules to remember include keeping your skin clean and using safe products! Look for products that are fragrance-free, paraben-free, and sulfate-free just to name a few. A lot of over-the-counter ingredients that treat acne, like Benzoyl Peroxide and Adapalene, are safe to use with the guidance of your doctor.
- Puberty: Not sure if you have started puberty or if you are close to getting your period? Your pediatrician has a lot of information they can share. A quick examination of your body (with your consent and a trusted adult in the room) can reveal some clues as to where you are in your puberty journey. Since puberty in females can start anywhere between the ages 8-12, there is a large range of normal and it can be confusing. (Turning Teen classes can help you a lot with this too!)
- Menstrual Problems: Just because you have a uterus doesn’t mean you have to suffer from painful period cramps or miss out on activities because of your period. There are so many ways to help you! After all - females need to rule the world, right?!? ;)
- Emotions: Feeling sad or anxious and not sure if it’s normal? Talking to your pediatrician is a good place to start. We all feel emotions (we aren’t robots!), but let your doctor help you decide if you need further professional help and at the very least, offer you some support.
So don’t be shy and ask your pediatrician for help on your adolescent journey!
You got this!
